Plan your next holiday in Na Muang on Koh Samui’s spectacular south coast, stretching from the verdant hills of its central mountain range down to the beautiful palm-fringed beaches of Laem Sor and Bang Kao. The area is named for the double waterfalls at Na Muang which cascade down through lush tropical forest and purple-hued boulders to the sea. The area is one of great pastoral charm with its emerald-green fields, grazing buffaloes and coconut plantations. From the airport, just a 45-minute drive, the well-developed tourist districts of Chaweng and Lamai are gradually left behind as you head south to a more rural landscape and slower pace of life.
The beaches and tidal flats of the south coast are renowned for their shimmering white sands and vast tidal flats. Just offshore, the islands of Koh Madsum and Koh Tean attract many visitors and at the nearby villages of Bang Kao and Thong Krut, Thai long-tail boats wait on the shore ready to ferry visitors out to swim and snorkel on these beautiful islands.
Things to do in Na Muang include a visit to Na Muang waterfalls. Views from the various lookouts are spectacular and offer a vista of the entire south of the island as far as the Thai mainland. Halfway between the two waterfalls is Namuang Safari Park where you can join an elephant trek or ride a quad bike through the jungle. Venture a little further up the mountain and wonder at the mystical, moss-covered sculptures at the Tarnim or Secret Buddha Garden.
There are many other things to do in Na Muang such as the magnificent Thai temples of Wat Phra Chedi Laem So at the end of the beach and Wat Khunaram and Wat Samret on the main road. Despite its rural setting, Na Muang has plenty to offer on the culinary front. Perched high up in the hills, local restaurants such as Giant View offer delicious Thai cuisine and spectacular views, while down by the beach, rustic bars and restaurants compete for custom with some of the island’s most popular international eateries such as Sweet Sisters and Le French Kiosk at Thong Krut.
