Bang Tao Beach is a sparkling swathe of sand stretching 6km along Phuket’s west coast. Attracting windsurfers and sunseekers alike, Bang Tao is a family favourite with its shallow waters, beachfront dining choices and plenty of fresh-air activities both on and off the beach.
Just a 30-minute drive from Phuket Airport, Bang Tao Beach lies north of Surin Beach and south of some of Phuket’s largest but most secluded beaches, including Nai Thon and Mai Khao. During the calmer, breezy months of November to April, Bang Tao is host to stand up paddleboarding, windsurfing and swimming action, while surfing is possible for the rest of the year. Be cautious and watch for red-flag warnings during these months as strong currents may occasionally make the sea off-limits for swimming.
Bang Tao’s long sandy beach is lined with resorts and beach clubs. Surf and paddleboards may be hired, with lessons available for those looking to improve their sporting prowess. Sunseekers preferring quieter surrounds can head north to the pretty and peaceful Layan Beach or further up to Banana Beach, a small white sand cove with excellent snorkelling, reached via a steep path.
Inland, between Bang Tao and Cherng Talay, lies Laguna Phuket, an upscale resort area boasting six hotels, a handful of luxury villas and a range of sports and leisure attractions including the Laguna Golf Course, several spas, a mini-golf course and a horse riding centre. Free shuttle service ferries guests around the estate, and even drops them off to the entrance beyond which one can find a diverse mix of antiques, eclectic clothing, home decor and art. In the same area is a cluster of pleasant restaurants and bars including the long-established Supper Club, where celebrities are occasionally spotted rubbing shoulders with local expats.

Nature trails and waterfalls, wakeboarding lakes and golf courses, Buddhist temples and inspiring clifftop viewpoints list amongst the island’s many attractions. Phuket Old Town is the best place to delve into the island’s local cuisine and culture, with colourful Sino-Portuguese buildings lining its streets. Stroll around the Sunday street market, linger in a cafe or visit one of the museums to soak up the Old Town atmosphere.
