Set above a quiet river valley, Villa Mako blends the luxury and grandeur of Dutch colonial architecture with the picturesque surroundings of a small village north of Bali beach town Canggu.  This three-bedroom retreat is stately in design, yet warmly and richly decorated with eclectic interiors reflecting the passions and travels of the owners. Balinese and Javanese antiques and a bold use of colour create a unique and comfortable sanctuary for guests.  This single-storey villa, characterised by louvred shutters, recycled teak doors and floors, and spectacularly high wooden ceilings, benefits from cooling breezes and a flooding of natural light courtesy of its elevated position.

Comfort and relaxation are the focus of Villa Mako’s plush interiors, and furnishings feature oversized sofas, daybeds, poolside loungers and plenty of cushions, so guests will always find a private place for peace and quiet.  Featuring a range of indoor and outdoor living and entertainment spaces, including three dining areas, open-plan kitchen, fully equipped media room and sundrenched terraces, Villa Mako is ideal for families or groups of friends.  Beyond the main house, a beautifully landscaped tropical garden, complete with its own serene temple, rolls down to a generously sized swimming pool (with shallow feature suitable for children) and a large outdoor dining pavilion.  The garden vista flows on to the tropical jungle canopy outside the villa walls and beyond to the surrounding rice terraces creating a picture-perfect backdrop to the serenity of Villa Mako.

Set just beyond Bali’s tourist areas in the tiny village of Tiying Tutul, beside Canggu and Pererenan, Villa Mako sits amid the rhythms of agricultural life and gracefully honours Balinese culture.  A warm and dedicated team of staff including villa manager, chef, housekeepers, gardener, pool attendant and security will attentively and discretely cater to guests’ every whim to ensure your perfect Bali holiday.

Location

Villa Mako rests just beyond the borders of Canggu and Pererenan, providing a peaceful retreat within easy reach of the tourist buzz.  Amongst the rice fields which extend all the way down to the beach, you will not only find some of the most luxurious private residences on the island, but also a great selection of eclectic restaurants, cafes, bakeries, boutiques and beach bars – especially along Jalan Batu Bolong, which runs right down to the beach.  Popular beach spots include Finns Beach Club, Old Man’s, La Laguna, The Lawn and Ji@Bale Sutra.

Tiying Tutul, the village or ‘banjar’ around Villa Mako remains primarily agricultural even though it is less than five kilometres from popular Canggu beaches.  At the bottom of the garden is a rustic brick wall with a gateway opening onto the riverbank.  Here, guests will find a simple and private riverside balé, perfect for meditation.  This is also the site of a holy spring, where villagers make offerings to the gods.  80 metres further along the river is the village temple.  Guests will be welcomed at temple festivals; some may even be lucky enough to witness a barong dance or other Hindu ceremony.  The villa staff will be happy to help with ceremonial clothing and advice on etiquette.

Things to do

The villa manager will typically have a wealth of information about nearby places of interest and will help arrange transport and make any bookings required. Do also ask the staff about the local area.  Invariably some of them will live nearby and will be able to give an interesting insight into some of the fascinating aspects of Bali life.

In the meantime, here is a taste of the many and varied activities on offer within reach of the villa.

  • Catch a wave, or several, at some of Bali’s best surfing beaches, only ten to fifteen minutes away.  Among the string of naturally beautiful beaches, don’t miss long-time surfers haunt, Echo Beach – but all are in prime position for Bali’s legendary sunsets.
  • On Canggu Beach, be sure to visit mystical Hotel Tugu Bali.  Listed in the Robb Report (the World’s Best of the Best), Bali’s first museum-hotel is studded with priceless Indonesian artworks and antiques.  The boutique hotel’s award-winning spa offers age-old Eastern therapies.
  • Make the de rigueur pilgrimage to sacred Pura Tanah Lot, one of Bali’s biggest tourist magnets.  Perched high on a craggy wave-lashed rock, this ancient sea temple is most popular at sunset, but we suggest guests go early morning to enjoy the location in peace!
  • Fashionistas and shop-a-holics should hot-foot it down to Bali’s most cosmopolitan enclave, Seminyak. Here, you can indulge for hours in the glut of stylish, global-inspired restaurants – such as Sarong and Metis, chic boutiques and hipper-than-thou bars on Seminyak beachfront.
  • Drive west to explore the unchartered West Bali region, where the charming Tabanan regency reveals terraced rice fields of emerald green, volcanic mountains and black sand beaches dotted with fishing communities – the treasures that Bali is famed for.
  • For a day of culture and dramatic landscapes, head north to Mount Batukaru with its major temple and the nearby rice-fields of Jatiluwih, a UNESCO World Heritage sight; or to the mountain town of Bedugul. From here, explore three volcanic lakes, including Bratan, with its photogenic and stunningly positioned Pura Ulun Danu – one of Bali’s most important temples.
  • Take the villa’s bikes out for a spin and cycle round local villages or down to Pererenan and Echo Beaches.
  • Ubud, the cultural capital of Bali, is around an hour’s cross-country drive away. An easy day trip to admire the workshops and galleries and maybe watch one of the many dance performances in the early evening, or enjoy one of the many restaurants perched over gorges or rice-fields.
